What Is GORE-TEX® and How Does It Actually Work?

If you've ever wondered why GORE-TEX® workwear costs more than a standard waterproof jacket, the answer's in the membrane. GORE-TEX® isn't just a coating sprayed onto fabric. It's a genuine technology, and understanding how it works helps explain why it holds up on site when cheaper waterproofs don't.

How the GORE-TEX® membrane works

At the core of every GORE-TEX® product is a thin membrane with millions of pores per square centimetre. Those pores are small enough to block liquid water from getting in, but large enough to let water vapour (sweat) escape. That's the waterproof-yet-breathable trick in a nutshell: you stay dry from the outside and from the inside.

The brand has spent 50 years refining this, including the newer ePE membrane used in current-generation GORE-TEX® products, built to the same waterproof and breathable standard with a lower environmental footprint in manufacturing.

Built to Perform, Not Just Repel

Ordinary waterproof coatings break down fast. Repeated washing, general wear, and exposure to grease and dirt on site all wear away basic water-resistant treatments within a handful of wears. GORE-TEX® works differently. The membrane itself does the waterproofing, not just a surface coating, so performance doesn't fade the way it does with standard waterproofs.

Staying dry isn't only about keeping rain out, either. Sweat trapped inside a jacket is just as fast a route to being cold and wet on the inside. GORE-TEX® is built to let that moisture escape while still blocking water from getting in, so you stay dry and comfortable through a full shift, not just protected from the weather.

Why it matters for tradespeople

Standard waterproofing breaks down with wear, washing, and abrasion. GORE-TEX® products are built and tested to keep performing over the long term, which matters when a jacket or pair of boots is doing five shifts a week outdoors, not the odd weekend walk. Breathability also isn't just a comfort feature. Sweat trapped inside a jacket is a fast route to being cold and wet from the inside, which is exactly what waterproofing is meant to prevent.
