What Is Thinsulate™ and Why Is It So Warm for So Little Bulk?

Bulky insulation used to be the only way to stay warm. Thinsulate™ was built to break that trade-off, and it's worth understanding how, because "thermal lining" isn't a single thing.

How Thinsulate™ actually works

The core insulation uses extremely fine microfibers, far finer than natural fibres like down or wool. Finer fibres pack more surface area into the same space, which traps more still air, and still air is what actually insulates. That's why Thinsulate™ can deliver warmth at a fraction of the thickness of traditional lining, while still letting moisture escape rather than trapping it against the skin.

Some versions go further. The Xerogel range adds a material that's over 99% air by volume, layered into the insulation for extra warmth without adding meaningful bulk.

Why bulk was never actually the answer

Traditional insulation relies on thickness: more material, trapped in more layers, to hold in heat. The trouble is that thickness also means stiffness. Bulky linings restrict shoulder movement, bunch up under harnesses and tool belts, and make crouching or reaching that bit harder, exactly the movements a working day is full of.

Thinsulate™ gets its warmth from the density of the fibres, not the thickness of the layer, so garments can stay slim enough to move properly in and layer easily under a jacket or over-trouser without adding bulk on bulk. The same logic applies to breathability. Because the insulation is built to let moisture escape rather than trap it, you're not left carrying damp, heavy layers by the end of a shift, which matters as much for comfort as staying warm in the first place.

Why it matters

For anyone working outdoors through winter, warmth that adds bulk usually costs you dexterity, mobility, or both. Thinsulate™'s whole premise is warmth that doesn't get in the way of doing the job, and the specialised ranges mean the insulation can be matched to the actual risk, whether that's cold, wet, flame exposure, or just needing to move freely all shift.
